Nokia‘s new GPS journey and media tracking application, NokiaviNe just launched a couple days ago. I’ve been trying to get a couple friends to check it out but apparently as simple as I thought it was to operate, it was slightly complicated for them.
So to help them and anybody else out, here’s how to record and upload a journey using NokiaviNe.
Right now, you should know that currently NokiaviNe is only compatible with the E71, N78, N79, N82, N85, N95 8GB and N96 handsets. The list is expected to grow.
Now if you’ve been reading this blog, you by no doubt know about NokiaviNe already, but if you havent, its basically an improved version of Nokia’s Sportstracker service, thats more oriented towards traveling and media. It uses your phone’s built-in GPS unit to track where you go, what photos or videos you take, and what music you’re listening to. This is all saved as a “viNe”. Later after you’re done recording your journey, you can uploaded your “viNe” to the Nokia viNe site, so you can easily share with others.
First, to get things started, you’ll have to head on over to the official site to register and download the application.
If you’ve already got a Nokia account or Nokia SportsTracker account, you might have to log into the SportsTracker site to link your NokiaviNe account, otherwise your uploads might not work properly.
Luckily NokiaviNe automatically checks for new versions periodically, so this might be the only time you’ll have to do this.
Next, power up the application on your device and if it doesnt prompt you to, go into “Settings“–>”Reset Account” and enter in your account details into the application.
Then, go into “Settings“–>”Access Point” and select the access point you’d like NokiaviNe to use.
Unfortunately NokiaviNe doesnt have a separate primary and secondary access point option so the one you choose, is going to be the only one the application uses. Of course, you can change this whenever you’d like, but it would have been nice if the application had that option. If the N-gage application has it, why not the newer NokiaviNe app ?
Note: If your phone is in offline mode, NokiaviNe will NOT connect to wifi or any dataplan. This is a bug since the early build that still hasnt been fixed unfortunately. Also, if your wifi is cut or disconnected while the application is running, you might have to restart the app, to get it to connect again. Hopefully this will be fixed in an update.
The application might prompt you to select an avatar, but if it doesnt, just go into “Settings“–>”Select Avatar” and select an avatar. This serves as the “marker” that’ll show you, your position on the onscreen Map.
Next you can go into “Settings“–>”Media Settings” and mark whether you want NokiaviNe to tag any Music you listen on, on the viNe. You can also select whether you want to upload media during Live Sharing or just the route.
You are now ready and setup to start recording viNes.
Now to start recording your journey, all you have to do is press the center button of your Dpad (listed as “Record” in the app). Notice the GPS icon and the Data Transfer Icon turn red when you get a GPS lock, or are transfering data.
The application will also prompt you, asking if you want to ‘Broadcast‘ or ‘Live Share’ this viNe.
Live sharing means the application will continuously upload and update the viNe to the NokiaviNe site, as you go. This does use a significant amount of data though, so make sure you’re not using a data plan that is too expensive.
You’ll see that the on-screen prompt changes to just a Map, and a greyed out area while it searches for a GPS lock.

Now remember, it might take a couple seconds to a couple minutes to get a GPS lock. So you’ll have to be a little bit patient.
Once it does get a lock though, you’ll see your avatar on screen to indicate your position on the Map.
You can now start your journey ! As you move, you’ll notice the route being tracked via GPS on the Map in NokiaviNe. The application does a very good job of tracking the route, and doesnt seem to consume much battery power at all, compared to say, running Nokia Maps for the same amount of time.
You can also take any pictures, or videos along the journey. You’ll notice that they’re all geo-tagged to the place where you took them, on the map. How cool is that ?
You can view any of the recorded images or videos on the viNe by scrolling to their thumbnail icon and clicking on it.
Images are shown with a green thumbnail icon.
Videos with a pink icon.
And if you listen to any music on your trip, it’ll also be geo-tagged to the location where you started listening to the song. Music’s shown under a blue thumbnail icon.
You can choose not to record ‘Music listened to’ though, as I stated earlier.
During this whole recording procedure, if you stop at a particular location too long, you can choose to pause recording on the viNe.
You can continue recording again from the same point on the viNe as soon as you start moving again.
At any point on the Map you can choose to zoom in or out of the Map using the * and # keys.
You can also switch to “Grid view” if you want a better view of all the media you’ve recorded so far.
And remember, NokiaviNe doesnt have to be your foreground application to record your journey. You can select “hide” using the right selection key at any time, to send the application to the background. Dont worry though, it’ll keep recording everything fine, while its in the background.
Now once you’re done with your journey, you can stop recording by selecting, or by going to options and choose “Stop recording“.
At this point, the application will ask you to name your viNe.
You can also choose to upload all the Media that the viNe has recorded, or only certain ones. You can also choose to upload this viNe later.
If you choose to proceed with uploading it, you’ll be asked to attach any tags to your viNe.
A tag is just a keyword which will make it easier for people to find it. For example, if I upload a viNe from my town, I’ll tag it as “Manipal“. You can add more tags by separating them with commas. The application, will in some cases, suggest Tags for you.
If you choose to upload later, you can upload your vine at any time by scrolling to the viNe and selecting it, then go to “Options“–> “Upload Journey“.
Once you select proceed, you’ll see NokiaviNe connect to your dataplan and being uploading your viNe. You dont have much else to do except stare at the progress bar, or hide the application in the foreground and use your phone as you normally would.
Once the viNe’s uploaded, you’ll get a “Upload successful” notification within th
e NokiaviNe application.
You can visit your old viNes at anytime by going to options “viNes“.
All your old viNes will be listed there.
That’s it for the application !
To view your viNe online, you can go to the NokiaviNe site, and scroll to over your country.
You should see your viNe listed there, next to the location where you started recording your journey. For example, I’m in India, so my viNe was listed here.
You can tell your friends they can view your journey there to, since the site’s public.
Now since the site’s public, if you uploaded an embarrassing image or video or just one that you want to edit or delete any media that you uploaded, you’ll have to go to the SportsTracker website and manage it there.
Go to your dashboard. And select the name of your viNe there.
That should display your viNe in a more SportsTracker-ish way.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and mouse over the media. There you can delete any media that you dont want appearing on the NokiaviNe site.
Phew. Well that’s about it.
Hope this helps y’all ! See, that wasnt too hard was it ?
