On my recent vacation trip to Kerala, here in India, I got to play around a lot more with NokiaviNe. I used it to record our nice slow, lazy houseboat ride around Kerala’s Backwaters on Day One and two, and our walks around Varkala Beach on Day three, recording all the sights.
This turned out to be pretty cool, because it showed us how long we had been on the Houseboat or on our walks, the total distance we had traveled and it tagged each picture and video to the place it was taken, along the way. All this while recording our entire route via GPS. Lovely !
In an earlier post, I showed you how the NokiaviNe application worked and its basic features on the early alpha build I have. Now I intend to show you NokiaviNe in action.
Keep in mind though, this is an early alpha version and many things might change before the application is released. Most of the bugs I’ve encountered in this post might probably also be fixed by then.
Day one : On the HouseBoat :-
As soon as we got on the Houseboat, I activated NokiaviNe and allowed it to record my journey. I took a bunch of pictures along the way and a couple of videos, all of which were geo-tagged to their respective co-ordinates. After our boat docked at a nearby port for the night, I deactivated NokiaviNe and reviewed the day through what it had recorded. Pretty freakkin cool ! Here’s Day One’s Vine :
On the summary screen you see the route you’ve recorded, the total number of Pictures (in Green) and Videos (in Pink) taken, and the amount of Music (in Blue) you’ve listened to.
As you can see, I didnt listen to any Music while on the boat, but I took plenty of pictures, 20 to be exact and 3 videos too.
From the summary screen, you can select the map and scroll through your journey, looking at any pictures or videos you took along the way.
For example, heres a picture of our port, where we stopped at dusk :
(Note : For some strange reason, the Time Taken for the pictures and videos recorded is wrong. Just a bug in the built I’m using I guess. I’m sure they’ll fix that before releasing the app)
Like I said earlier, you can also view any videos you’ve taken :
Pretty cool eh ? After this, you can upload it to the NokiaviNe site to allow your friends to view your journey !
Here’s Day One on the NokiaviNe Site :
As you can see, it shows you the entire route on a map, along with all the pictures and videos that you took, and any music you listened to. The NokiaviNe site uses Nokia‘s own Maps right now so the map isnt as precise as it could be. But in this case its good enough to show you that we were in Kerala’s Backwaters, which is a series of Lakes joined together.
Also, there are talks of a NokiaviNe Widget which you can embed in your blog posts or your website, to show people your journeys more conviniently. Initially I intended to hold this blog post untill the widget was out, because I was told it would be released to us Nokiavine testers 2 weeks ago. But, sadly, it has yet to make an appearance, so I cant really tell you anything about it.
Until then though, there’s still the Nokia Nseries Map + Photography Widget which you can use in Facebook, or embed in your blog post, like I’ve done at the end of this post. As of now, it seems to display your Nokia SportsTracker routes along with your NokiaVine Journeys (but thats only because at the moment for us testers, the NokiaviNe Journey info is pushed to our SportsTracker account and from there to the Day Two : On the Houseboat again :-
Right after breakfast, we headed for another trip around Kerala’s Backwaters on the houseboat. This time though, we asked our captain to take us through the narrower canals around the place. I activated NokiaviNe once again to track our journey.
A couple hours later it was time for us to leave the houseboat and proceed to our next destination. Time to review the day then !
As you can see, the canals our boat took, are not shown on Nokia‘s Map so it appears our boat was moving from land to sea all the time, but I assure you, we werent ! Nokia Maps for India, even Nokia themselves admitted, simply arnt good enough yet. But if you live in a part of the world where the Maps coverage is good, you wont have the same problem.
Again, you can go from the summary screen to the scrollable Maps screen where you can check out all the pictures and videos you tracked with NokiaviNe.
Like I said earlier, while reviewing your journey, you can view any of the pictures you took during the day.
As soon as I was done, I uploaded it all to the NokiaviNe site to let my friends see my journey !
Here’s Day Two on the NokiaviNe Site :
(Note : Because of a random bug, it wasnt showing the route I recorded, but I’m sure they’ll fix that before the application is released)
Like I said before, you can click on any image on your Vine in the site, and see a smaller resolution version of it. Ofcause, you can also see the videos you recorded and uploaded along with the Vine.
Day Three : At Varkala Beach in Kerala :-
Whats more relaxing than a day at the beach ? I recorded two vines for this one. One was a walk along the beach, and the other was a sightseeing walk around the arena.
Vine one : A walk along Varkala Beach :-
We walked along the 1km beach stretch and took a whole bunch of pictures and a video.
As you can see, the beach was pretty long, but really beautiful.
After we were done with the beach, I immediately uploaded the viNe to my account on the NokiaviNe Site, to let everyone have a look at how awesome the place was :
Vine Two : Th
e sights and temples of Varkala Beach :-
After a couple hours laying around on the beach, soaking in the rays, we thought we’d go for a little walk around the area. There were plenty of very cozy small restaurants and souvenir shops along the way and, as is common here in India, a Hindu Temple with intricate carvings and statues.
I even got a really good shot of the sky close to sunset :
After I was done, as always, I uploaded my journey to the Nokiavine Site.
And here’s the viNe on the NokiaviNe Site :
So thats my three days of NokiaviNe action. Until the embeddable widget comes along however, its a little inconvenient to show your friends your journey, but once it comes along its going to be great. For now, there’s the Nokia N-series Maps & Photography Widget which I’ve embedded here :
NokiaviNe in Action
In order to view the Nokia Nseries Widget you need JavaScript and Flash Player 9+ support
var so = new SWFObject(“http://www.nseries.com/nseries/widget/widget.swf”, “Nseries Widget”, “250″, “390″, “9″, “#ffffff”);so.addParam(“scale”, “noscale”);so.addParam(“wmode”, “transparent”);so.addVariable(“lang”, “en” );so.addVariable(“username”, “clintonjeff” );so.addVariable(“colorid”, “0″ );so.addVariable(“title”, “NokiaviNe%20in%20Action” );so.addVariable(“platform”, “blogger.com”);so.addVariable(“url”, document.location.href);so.addVariable(“customURL”, “http://www.nseries.com/nseries/widget/data/customize.txt”);so.write(“flashcontent”);
To view my viNes yourself, you’ll have to go to the NokiaviNe site :
Select “View viNes” on the lower left side of the site , and click “Cj” on the window that pops up :
There are also a whole bunch of other contributors listed there who are also testing out NokiaviNe right now, whom you can also check out.
Once you click on my name and select “View Vines“, scroll over to India on the world Map and you’ll see a couple viNes I’ve uploaded :
You can click on them and zoom in to see more of it :
So there you have it. This is NokiaviNe in action. According to me atleast. This should give you an idea of how I use it when I travel and how it allows me to show my friends the places I’ve go to, before I’ve even leave.
So what do you think about NokiaviNe now ? How would you use it ?
