Blogging from your Symbian Device using Nokia’s Lifeblog

There are a few moments when I was on one of my travels and saw or thought something that I really wanted to blog about. Ofcause at those particular moments, I wasnt anywhere near a computer. And in a place like India, if you’re travelling around any of the touristic spots, it can be hard pressed to find one, that too with a decent internet connection.

But this is one of those times when you could just blog directly from your Symbian phone, provided ofcause you have a working network dataplan. There are a couple of methods through which you can do this. I’m going to be talking about the method I have tried and tested. That is, using the Lifeblog application.

How to post to your blog using the Nokia Lifeblog Application :

You can use your in-device Nokia Lifeblog application to post images and text to your blog. To follow this method you need :

-A Symbian phone that has Nokia Lifeblog installed on it, or is compatible with it.

-A Flickr account.

Nokia Lifeblog actually supports only TypePad blogs. But posting to other blogs is also possible. You just need a Flickr account. Flickr is a service supported by Lifeblog and you are allowed to use their service to post photos straight to your blog, as a post, passing through Flickr.

And as Flickr can post to almost every type of blog in the world (e.g. Blogger, Typepad, Moveable Type, LiveJournal, WordPress, Manila, Atom enabled, Blogger API enabled, and MetaWeblogAPI enabled blogs) that means you can use Lifeblog to post to your blog via Flickr even if that weblog doesn’t support Lifeblog directly! Though you can only post photos in that way, and not SMS, MMS, videos, or notes like you can with direct Lifeblog posting.

First of all, you need to configure your Flickr account to work with your blog. You can do that by following these instructions.

After that, you have to add your Flickr account to Lifeblog :-

Open up the LifeBlog application in your phone. Go to Options then to Settings :

Under “Settings” select “Blog” :

This will take you to the Blog accounts tab. Select Options using your left selection key and scroll to “New Account” and select it :

You will then come across the following screen :

This is the information you have to add into it :

* Server: http://www.flickr.com/services/atom2blog/
* Username: YOURUSERNAME
* Password: YOURLIFEBLOGPASSWORD

To get YOURLIFEBLOGPASSWORD, you have to sign in into Flickr and go to this page to recover it (it’s different from your Flickr password).

Once you’ve done all that, save and exit the account settings menu and you’ll see your blog name listed there :

In the Lifeblog application, navigate through your timeline to the image you wish to blog about, and select it :

Then go to Options –> Post to Web :

That will take you to a screen that should look something like this :

You can click on any of the text sections to change them. For example if I want to change the Title, I scroll over to the Title Section and select it :

At any time, if you feel you’re not happy with your blog post, you can quit by pressing to right selection key to select “Exit“. The Lifeblog application will warn you that you’ll lose the post you were working on :

After you’re done and satisfied with your blog post, go to Options –> Send :

The blog post will automatically be sent to Flickr and posted on your blog, via your network data plan or Wifi if you happen to be around some.

The only disadvantages I can think of, of this method, is that you will not be able to edit the style of your fonts. No bold or Italics either.Also, this method can only be used to post Photos with accompanying text. No videos. No text alone.

Still better than nothing, I say. This method makes it pretty easy to blog from your symbian phone. Just make sure you dont go crazy with it if you’re on a limited data plan ( GPRS, etc), because each blog post with an image does count for a pretty substantial number of kilobytes that you might be charged for, if your network provider charges by the Kilobyte.

Here’s to mobile blogging, eh ?
