The “Edge” is a popular club in Manipal that occasional does fill up. Which is saying something in a small town like Manipal.

My friend Shambhavi (whom i affectionately refer to as “Shambawamba“) held her birthday party there yesterday night. A birthday party at a club ? Now that’s class ! We had a brilliant time dancing around to bad club music, acting like we own the place and generally being complete fools :D !
It was also a great occasion for me to test out my Nokia N82‘s xenon flash in the real world. In a dark, poorly lit club.
Edge isnt really lit that great. Other than the blacklight/UV light that made everything glow, there was no other source of light in there. Infact I could barely make out whom I was talking to half the time ( Or hear them over the loud music but thats a different story).
Its pretty safe to say, the N82 sure had its work cut out for it.
It should be noted that the images have been resized to fit the blog but otherwise untouched.Due to a friend’s request, i will not be linking the resized images to the full 5 Megapixel images.
To start things off, a picture with flash turned off, to show you the state of things :
Yup. No light. Just glowy things. This is what the N82 had to deal with.
The party started at about 8:30 pm. Everyone arrived by about 9pm eventually. I really love how Edge has a mirrored wall so that it looks like its twice as big as it actually is.
Lets begin with the close up images. Keep in mind these were taken inside the dark club :

^Akshit and Murtaza
^Teh Cj and Nishta

^Murtaza and Teh BaBz
^Teh BaBz , Teh Cj and Akshit

^ Murtaza being all lonely and stuff
You can see that the N82 performs very well if the subject is close. Infact you wouldnt even be able to tell that there wasnt that much light to begin with. All pictures turned out sharp and focused.
One thing I did notice however was that the N82 does have a problem with red eye reduction. In many of the pictures , the subjects all suffered from red-eye. I’m not sure if maybe a camera software revision in a future firmware update can fix this , but it is a problem, although a very small one.
The not so close ups. These pictures were taken about a couple meters away from the subject :

^Aakashna, Teh Babz and Murtaza
As you can see the pictures turned out pretty good. The N
82 had a problem focussing in some shots , but the majority turned out sharp and clear. The red eye problem seems to be much worse at this distance though.
The far aways. These shots were taken much farther away from the subject. About 8-10 feet away :

^The crowd before everyone arrived
As you can see the xenon flash of the N82 does not travel very far. The N82 also had a lot of problems focusing at this distance so the majority of pictures turned out unfocused and blurry.Once again the red eye problem surfaces. Although definitely better than a single LED or dual LED setup , the far away shots are a little disappointing. Then again most midrange budget cameras tend to struggle in this situation too.
So there you have it. The N82‘s performance in a club. The majority of the pictures turned out great , with the exception of the far away shots. The red eye problem is annoying but any image manipulation software , like photoshop, can be used to fix this.
Interms of a cellphone camera, the N82 is definitely the best one for “Club photos”. Interms of a dedicated camera , its okay.It holds its ground but it definately isnt the best.
But then would you rather carry your dedicated camera to a club alongwith your cellphone, or would it be more convinient and “cool” to just have your Nokia N82 to do it all ?
