I had a chance to mess around with Babz‘s Nokia 6500 slide ,yesterday .
As you might already know, the Nokia 6500 slide features a Carl Zeiss lens , with auto focus at 3 MegaPixels. It also has a Dual-Led flash compared to the single led flash most cameraphones have these days.
My Nokia N82 has a 5Megapixel Carl Zeiss auto focus lens with a Xenon Flash.
With both these gadgets in my hand, I figured a Dual LED flash vs Xenon flash faceoff was in order. Maybe a taste of the photo quality of the upcoming N96 which also features a dual-led flash.
It should be known that the 6500 slide is a series 40 (s40) phone so its image processing algorithms may not be as good as the N82′s series 60 (s60/Symbian) image processing.
And just to be fair , i set my N82‘s camera to take pictures at 3 Megapixels to be as close as possible to the 6500 slide.
Here we go (Click on the image to go to the original size) :
Depending on your browser :
Left/Top : Dual LED (Nokia 6500 Slide) Right/Bottom : Xenon Flash (Nokia N82)
Pic 1 :
Taken with the room’s lights on. Both camera’s have been set to use their flashes.
Here we can see that the N82 captures a more natural color of the ball , but the 6500‘s Dual LED flash doesnt do a bad job at all.
Pic 2 :
Taken in complete darkness .
Here we can see that the N82 completely blows the 6500′s dual LED flash out of the water. While you can see all the objects in the 6500‘s picture (albeit with a blueish tint) , they are more detailed and at a more natural color in the N82‘s picture due to the xenon flash.

The 6500 does an okay job here but the xenon flash image wins again. More detail , more natural color again.
Pic 4 :
Taken in complete darkness, with the laptop’s screen on.
For some strange reason the 6500 refused to properly focus in this image. The result is respectable. Yet ,again the N82‘s image is way better, clearer except for the reflection of the flash on the laptop screen.

Again the xenon flash wins. The proof is in the picture , not much else to say.

Again , the 6500′s dual led flash isnt powerful enough to light the whole room, as in the case of the N82‘s picture , with its xenon flash. Although the image does contain a lot of noise.
Pic 6 :
Taken with the light on. Both camera’s on close up mode.
This is one thing i liked about the 6500 Slide‘s camera software. It automatically detects when it should be in macro (close up) mode and when to be in normal mode. The results of both cameras is more or less the same , with the N82 being just slightly ahead. I guess for close up pictures , the Dual LED is enough.
Pic 7 :
Taken outside , at night , with no light source.
The N82 manages to capture a better color of the wall and the image is brighter, due to its xenon flash. But otherwise the results are more or less the same.
Pic 8 :
Taken outside , at night , with no light source.
The 6500 slide had a tough time focusing in this picture. The results are completely in the N82‘s favour in this one. The Xenon flash manages to capture mostly all of the plants and grass but the 6500′s dual LED flash barely manages to capture one.
So there you have it. The Dual LED flash is definately better than a single LED , but the Xenon Flash is still miles ahead. If you’re a camera oriented person and take a lot of pictures at night , you’ll want a phone with a xenon flash. If you dont take that many pictures in the night at all or if you do , only close up pictures , a dual-led flash will keep you happy on most occasions.
As for me ? I’m very happy with my xenon flash equipped black N82
